This week we shared stories with our reading buddy class for the last time this year. We also had our 'moving on' assembly today. We hope everyone who came enjoyed it.
Monday 3rd - Friday 7th July 2017
We have been studying the author Anthony Browne and this week we have written a story based on one of his books 'Gorilla.' This work will be the first piece of work that our new Year 3 teacher will read - so we have tried really hard with our writing and we hope our new teacher will really enjoy the stories.
We were very lucky this week to have 2 children visit us from Sandhopper Class- Troy and Lilac.
We asked them some questions about what life was like in Year 2!
They were very articulate and answered all questions very clearly and very honestly- thank you Troy and Lilac!
Monday 26th - Friday 30th June 2017
Friday was a busy day! We said goodbye to our six beautiful butterflies. We have enjoyed their metamorphosis and it was lovely to see them fly away. It was also sports day on Friday and we had a really good afternoon of races. Well done to the winning team. Xx
Monday 19th - Friday 23rd June 2017
What a hot week!!! We have been taking it easy reading and enjoying watching the growth of our caterpillars. On Thursday we were excited as all our caterpillars had turned into chrysalides and it was time to move them into their new habitat. Very carefully Mrs Knight moved them but when they wiggled it made her jump!!! We were surprised that they were defending themselves from a predator! Now we wait for the butterflies to emerge.
Monday 12th - Friday 16th June 2017
We have been excitedly watching the growth of the vegetables in our mini allotment! Some of the pea and bean pods are so big. We are looking forward to eating them later! In English we have been writing descriptive poetry about aliens. We began by working with a partner to create descriptive noun phrases. Then we shared our ideas with each other. Last Friday we had six new members of Sandhopper Class - six baby caterpillars! They have grown so much in one week. Everyone loves studying them through the magnifying glasses.
Monday 5th - Friday 9th June 2017
We began our week learning how to sprint. There were some starting positions that helped us run faster! In Design and Technology we built winding mechanisms out of construction equipment which was great fun. We have also been performing a poem to the rest of the class in groups. The poem is called 'Do Aliens Wear Underpants?' See if you can remember how it goes.
This week as part of our RE lessons we visited Wesley Church. We all sat down and were introduced to the Reverend Julia who told us some really interesting facts. She explained that she wore a cassock with sixty buttons and that she said a prayer as she did up each button! We learnt about baptisms using the font and holy communion where bread and wine is used to remember Jesus. It was fun when Julian played the organ! Some people had to cover their ears. Have a lovely half term everyone and we will see you back in school on the 5th June for the last half term in the Lower School.
This week we have been working hard on our multiplication and division skills. We are very proud of ourselves and then we ended our week by playing with our 'chatter boxes.' We will bring one home to try with our families. We have also had great fun going on an English spelling and grammar treasure hunt. Everyone really enjoyed the activity.

This week we have been practising telling the time. We have tried to recognise and then draw or make o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to times. We also sang 'Days of the Week' and 'Months of the Year' to help us remember.
Monday 1st - Friday 5th May
Another busy week!! We all thoroughly enjoyed our Mayday celebrations on Wednesday. The dances were lovely and some mums and dads had a go at maypole dancing at the end. We have also been working on adding amounts of money. There was a great game which we played on the computers.
Monday 24th - Friday 28th April 2017
This week in science we had the task of creating bird scarers for our mini allotments. We worked in groups to create our sculptures from a variety of shiny, noisy materials. We were pleased with the results and we are excited to see if they actually work.
Monday 17th - Friday 21st April 2017
This week we were lucky enough to have a visit from the 'Snakes Alive' team! We met "Kabul' a Royal Python and we learnt that he had 120 teeth!! "Little Dave' was a Rankins Lizard from China who lived in the sand. 'Little Toad' was a indeed a toad who moved very quickly. Then we met 'Rose' the tarantula and we saw the mattress that she spun for herself. Last of all we met a stick insect from Asia. Finally we had the opportunity to hold or stroke 'Kabul'
Monday 27th - Friday 31st March 2017
On Monday we were so excited as we were off to the Tower of London! We arrived at school early to walk down to the station. The Journey on the train was fun and we met a policeman and a police lady! Some of us tried on their handcuffs. The Tower was amazing! We met Mistress Flea who told us all about the Great Fire. Everyone agreed that the Crown Jewels were spectacular, shimmering and glinting in the lights. It was sad when it was time to come home but we were happy to have a rest on the train back to Leigh. It was a fabulous day and the weather was glorious.
Monday 20th - Friday 24th March 2017
This week we had a puzzle company visit our school. Year 2 learned all about coordinates and by the end of the session we were experts! We have also been learning about capacity in our maths lessons and the standard unit of measurement that we use. This week was exciting as finally in our Design and Technology lesson we made our fruit salads that we have been designing and thinking about. Everyone took them home and we were told that they were lovely! Xx
This week we went to the beach where we built our own London Town. We imagined that we were back in 1666 when the Great Fire began. The houses had to be very close together and we managed to build St Paul's Cathedral and The Tower of London. Seaweed was used to show where the Fire had spread. Then we formed a human chain and tried to put out the fire whilst singing 'London's Burning" We had great fun and the weather was beautiful.
Monday 6th - Friday 10th March 2017
We have been very healthy this week! On Monday we practised our tag rugby skills and everyone felt proud of their achievements. On Tuesday we practised using different tools to prepare fruit. We practised cutting, grating, juicing and coring. Some things were easier than others we decided. Apart from these things we have also been learning about 3D shapes, learning how to improve our writing and how to answer comprehension questions accurately.
Monday 27th February - Friday 3rd March 2017
What a busy week in Sandhopper Class!! We were transported back to the year 1666 on Monday when the Rainbow Theatre Company came to perform The Great Fire of London. Everyone had a part to play in the story. We all enjoyed the afternoon.
On Tuesday we tasted and rated different fruits in preparation for our fruit salad design. We also found that peach was the favourite fruit as 11 people liked it the best. Thursday was World Book Day and we carried out different activities as well as bringing our favourite book to school and dressing up as our favourite book character. We need the weekend to rest!!!!
Monday 20th - Friday 24th February 2017
On Tuesday we had Southend Dive School come to do some special skills with us. They will see over 2,000 children in the area and then around 200 children will be offered a place in the Dive School. We had to try and jump high with a good spring, hold our bodies in a position of strength and much much more. Everyone enjoyed the session as it was a good workout.

This week we have been working with money. We have recognised coins, added amounts, looked at equivalent values and even ran our own shops! Everyone has grown in confidence when working with money. Well done Sandhopper Class!
Monday 30th January Friday 3rd February 2017
This week we met the characters from Little Red Riding Hood. We had lots of questions to ask them. In drama we role played the story in groups of three. It was great fun.
Monday 23rd - Friday 27th January 2017
On Tuesday this week a group of children went to Waitrose where they learnt how to make fairy cakes. When they returned to school each person had the job of telling the rest of the class how to make them. We all had to listen very carefully and also we had to be sensible and take it in turns. Sandhopper class decided that they had done maths, English and food technology all in one lesson!
Monday 16th - Friday 20th January 2017
In our English work we have been learning about repetitive songs and poems. We learnt the rhyme London's burning and then we performed it in groups to the rest of the class. We were very proud of ourselves!
Last Saturday Lila sang with her singing group in front of many people at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon. She sang a song from the Lion King and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. We think she is very brave and we are all so proud of her. Well done Lila!!

We have been very busy since we came back to school! We have been writing poetry, carrying out science experiments, learning about the seasons in geography and learning about ordinal numbers and rounding in mathematics! Phew what a busy time!!
Thursday 6th - Friday 9th January 2017
Today we had our first gymnastics lesson. We practised balances, jumps, bunny hops along a bench and forward rolls. It was great fun!

Last Friday was our Christmas party. We had a very special visitor!!
Today we were scientists! We discussed what would happen if we melted wax and then put it into mounds. We saw that they had become hard again. Everyone had their own Lego person crayon to take home.

This week was very exciting as we were able to see our puppets come to life! We spent a busy afternoon cutting and sticking on all the detail. We love the finished Puppets.

We have been investigating man made and natural materials this week. We have made some Christmas wrapping paper and we have walked around the school identifying natural and man made objects.
We also had decorations morning when lots of mums, dads, grandmas and grandads came to help us make some fantastic decorations. Thank you everybody for your help!

This week we have been planning a story where Father Christmas finds that his reindeers have the flu!! What is he going to do? We discussed ideas, adjectives, adverbs and descriptive phrases. Some people also thought of amazing similes!, We are looking forward to writing this exciting story next week.
Monday 14th - Friday 18th November 2016
We have been scientists this week testing a hypothesis about hard materials. We went on a materials hunt around the school and then set up our experiment. We wanted to see if any of the materials absorbed water. So We tested glass, metal, wood, plastic and brick. Brick was the only material that absorbed water. After our science lesson we enjoyed looking at some lovely books at the book fair.

This week as usual we have been very busy!! We have learnt how to make toast and then we wrote some instructions. We have also been scientists testing a hypothesis about kitchen rolls and their absorbency. In history we learned all about Neil Armstrong and the first moon landing. Phew we are ready for the weekend now!!

This week we have been learning about the Gunpowder Plot. We went to the beach to re-enact the story. It was great fun and the weather was beautiful!! Now we are going to be journalists and we are going to write a newspaper article reporting on the events that lead up to the capture of Guy Fawkes.

We have had an exciting day as we met with Atlantic 5 who are our reading buddies. We read our Egyptian stories to them and they read 'Billy's New Frock to us. We really enjoyed our time with our buddy class and we're now already looking forward to the next time.

This week we have been so busy again! We have been artists painting Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' and also making a featured picture of his famous piece 'Sunflowers.' In maths we have been measuring using cms. Some of us used decimetre strips to measure items and some of us used a metre stick and strips to measure how far different cars travelled having rolled down a ramp.

In our Geography lessons we have been learning about Egypt. This week we went on a journey down the Nile and we carefully drew all the features and landmarks that could be seen. Then we recreated the River Nile in the classroom!

Another busy week! In our P.E and Science lessons we have been thinking about how important exercise is for us. We all made notes on how our bodies change while exercising.
Monday 19th - Friday 23rd September 2016
We were real artists this week! We drew a selection of fruit and then carefully used water colour paints to bring it to life. When we used the brushes we had to carefully 'stroke' the brush along the paper.
In gymnastics on Friday Lucy awarded some certificates to these children. Well done - super balancing!
Monday 12th - Friday 16th September 2016
We have had another busy week! Everyone enjoyed dressing up as a Roald Dahl character on Tuesday. In drama we role played how the Enormous Crocodile might have disguised himself. Some of the disguises were:- a door, a bowl, a statue and many more.

Wow what a week! We have been doing lots of work this week including English, Science, Maths and so much more. We are learning what to expect in Year 2. Today we did some gymnastics with Lucy. It was great fun!
