This week we have been busy making maths games. But before we made our own game with our learning partner we had a great time playing lots of different games to give us inspiration. We are looking forward to playing each other’s games as soon as they are finished.
We had a very exciting beginning this week! On Monday we were able to show our families, if they could come, all the work that we have done this year. Then on Tuesday it was time to set our butterflies free. We took them to the school garden and watched as one after the other they flew off to begin the life cycle all over again. Goodbye beautiful butterflies!
This week we had a road safety talk. Everyone had a turn crossing at a zebra crossing remembering to stand well back and also remembering to stop, look, listen and think before crossing. Even when crossing the zebra crossing we had to remember to keep looking both ways. We all took a little mascot home to remember stop, look, listen and think.
We have been watching our little caterpillars! We have had them for one week now and they have grown so much! Soon they will hang upside down in a J shape. This is when the most amazing miracle takes place. Apart from that in mathematics we have been practising telling the time. We played a game with our partners where we had to make our clocks match the time on our partners clock just by what they said! It was tricky and then we compared clocks. If we matched a counter or token was won.
Monday 11th June 2018 - Friday 15th June 2018
We have just begun our new Design and Technology focus which is Winding Mechanisms. First of all we discussed what a pulley wheel is and then we had some photos of various pulley wheels in action. We identified pulley wheels on cranes, rock climbing equipment, sailing boats to name but a few. Then in groups of four we had to create a stable structure and a pulley wheel that could actually lift something. It was quite tricky but everyone enjoyed the challenge.
Monday 4th June 2018 - Friday 8th June 2018
Well it’s been another busy week in Sandhopper Class. We have had fun learning and performing humorous poems about aliens. In Our ASSA lessons we have been practising skills in preparation for sports afternoon next Friday. Our art lesson was all about ‘The Great Wave’ by Hokusai where we created our own picture using a wax resist technique. In maths we have been exploring place value sometimes with numbers in the hundreds! Lastly in science we learnt about the seven life processes for all living things, MRS NERG. There was a lot of scientific language to remember. Phew well done Sandhopper Class.
This week we really enjoyed our Science minibeast hunt in the school garden. We have been learning about food chains and we tried to spot producers, consumers and predators in the mini beast world. At the end of the week we met up with our reading buddy class and together we made bunting to celebrate the Royal Wedding.
Well another busy week for Sandhopper Class! We have finished our fantasy stories now and Mrs Knight is looking forward to reading them all. Apart from that we have checked our bean plants in the hope that all of our bird scarers are working. In ICT this week we have been practising our number skills.
On Thursday we had our Mayday celebrations. We have been practising our dances over the last few weeks and it was exciting to show the dances to our families and friends. Luckily the weather was lovely and apart from just a couple of hiccups everything went well. The afternoon ended with a dance for the parents! Everyone enjoyed that.

This week we have been thinking about our class fantasy story. We have worked really hard with our Learning Partners discussing possible ideas for our story. Next week we will be writing our class story and we cant wait for the adventure to begin!
In our Science lessons we have now planted our mini allotments so this week we set about making bird scarers in order to protect our new bean plants from the hungry birds. We were pleased with the results.
Monday 16th April 2018 - Friday 20th April 2018
At the beginning of the week we had a visit from the Snakes Alive team. We learnt all sorts of amazing facts such as - cockroaches were around before the dinosaurs and snails are herbivores. We had the chance to stroke or gently hold a snake. The snake was very soft and smooth to touch. Then we had to remember all these facts when we write a recount of the visit.

We had an amazing day in London on Thursday! We were all so excited as we walked down to the station with our packed lunches and backpacks. We were quite tightly packed in on the train but everyone was really sensible. Once we arrived in London it was a short walk to The Tower where we got wrist bands to wear. Most of us visited the Crown Jewels first. They looked stunning and we couldn’t believe how they sparkled. After that we had our Fire!! Fire!! workshop and everyone became a house or a person who lived in London in 1666! Mrs Knight was St Paul’s Cathedral! We demonstrated how quickly the fire spread. After we had lunch we went in the White Tower where we saw lots of armour and other interesting things. Soon it was time to head back to the station to get our train home. What a lovely day and well done to Sandhopper Class for being so brilliant and thank you to all our helpers.
Monday 12th March – Friday 16th March 2018
We had a brilliant trip to the beach on Tuesday! Luckily it wasn’t raining and we all walked excitedly down to the beach. Once at the beach we discussed beach rules and then we set too building our own London city. First we made the River Thames and then we built houses along each side of the river making sure that we built them very close together. We then pretended that the seaweed was the fire and we formed a human chain passing buckets to the Thames and then passing them back to throw on the fire. Everyone agreed that it was a fun trip!
This week we had a lovely time trying lots of different fruits for our fruit salad designs in D&T. We had to rate each one and use some really descriptive adjectives in the reasons. We also practised using commas in our lists
Next week we will deciding on six different fruits that we would like to use, designing the look of the fruit salad and the logo. On Thursday everyone dressed up as a book character and bought in their favourite book to share with the class. Maia won our art competition when she carefully copied the front cover of her favourite book. Well done Maia!
On Monday we were so excited!! Everyone came to school dressed as if the year was 1666 which was the time of the Great Fire of London. In the afternoon we lined up by the KS2 hall and to our surprise who should meet us - Samuel Pepys! Then we went back in time to London in in 1665 and 1666. We had a workshop where everyone had a part to play. The finally we were ready and we re created the scenes from the Plague and the Great Fire. It was an amazing afternoon and we all learnt so much.

On February 16th it is the Chinese New Year. We have learnt about why each new year is named after a different animal. This year it is the year of the dog. Then we discussed all the different activities that children and adults take part in. The most important one is the New Year Parade where there is dancing, music, acrobats and most importantly - a dragon dance. We have designed a dragon mask for this parade. We used oil based pastels and let our imaginations go wild!!
We have been studying the traditional tale of Little Red Riding Hood. With our learning partner we created a room for her. She loves things beginning with R so we filled the rooms with lots of items. In maths we have been shopping and in science we have been investigating how to waterproof different materials. We were amazed at how the material suddenly became waterproof when we added wax to the surface!
This week we have been learning about stories from other cultures. We read a story called ‘Why Flies Buzz,’ and then we worked with others to retell the story. In maths we have been learning how to subtract a two digit number from a two digit number and in geography we have been finding out why there are no polar bears in the Antarctic. We have also been trying really hard with our joined up
We have had an exciting week waiting for our trip to Irma’s for our Attendance award treat. Finally it was Thursday and we set off in two groups to Irma’s. When we arrived some children sat in the restaurant and had a drink while the others went into the kitchens to create pizzas! The chef was really great and showed us how to mix the dough and roll it out. Then we could choose our own toppings. After that the pizza only took three minutes in the special ovens! We took them back to school and everyone was looking forward to eating them later. Thank you Irma’s we had an amazing time. 😄

As this week has been anti bullying week, in Sandhopper Class we acted out different scenarios and then discussed whether the actions would be called bullying or not. Then we discussed what would make a good friend. We enjoyed our acting out and we were able to discuss the actions together. We have also designed a puppet and some of us have begun to sew the parts of the puppet together. Can anyone remember the name of the stitch? We can’t wait to add all the detail in a couple of weeks.
This week we have been learning all about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot! We have acted out the events which led to the capture of Guy Fawkes, then we pretended to be journalists reporting about the news that shocked London! We had great fun and Mrs Knight hopes that everyone remembers the historical facts!

This week we have been very busy measuring! On Tuesday we went to the beach. Once there we had to try and find things that were exactly 1cm long or wide. Then we 'estimated' how long a metre would be in the sand. After we checked our estimates, we filled our metre line with beach items in a repeating pattern. At school we used decimetres to measure things including ourselves (and Mrs Knight!!) Apart from that we have had our last ASSA lesson, written our Egyptian adventure, located the seven continents and the oceans and seas of the world, discussed what we could do as a baby and what we can do now and lots more. Happy half term everyone!

Then we recreated the Nile in our classroom!
Monday 25th September – Friday 29th September 2017
We have been learning how to improve our sentences by adding lots more detail. We began with a really boring sentence and then we gradually added more information until we had a super sentence! Some people were nearly outside the door because our sentence was so long!
In our art lesson we have been learning about Vincent Van Gogh and how he used colour to represent his feelings and moods. Then we studied his painting 'Starry Night' and we created a mood board by mixing colours together.

We have learnt about how to write instructions in our English lesson, we have had our first ASSA session in PE and we have learnt all about the different food groups in Science. On top of that we have been learning all about place value in Mathematics and we have tried to sketch some fruit and vegetables in our Art lesson. Time to rest over the weekend and be all ready for Monday again.
We have been getting to know each other this week! We began by finding out something about our new classmates by talking to them and remembering what they had said! We have also been focusing on our school values. One activity was to make a tall tower out of newspaper. It was great fun and we certainly had to focus on Acceptance, Perseverance, Respect and Enjoyment.
Everyone is tired but looking forward to further challenges over the weeks to come.
